he head baker, Lazaro Jarquin, at La
Vaquita, a Hispanic-owned grocery
store featuring authentic Mexican
breads, pastries, and fresh foods, works
diligently in the oven room in the back
portion of the bakery, preparing trays of
freshly baked products for customers who
have traveled miles to enjoy the delicious
foods made here every day.
This bakery is one of the most prominent
in the city of Beaumont, Texas, a bustling
city 90 miles east of Houston that is billed
as " Texas with a little something extra. "
Hispanics represent the majority of the
state of Texas' population growth (the
Hispanic population grew by 2 million in
the state last year), and Beaumont is no
exception.
The baker at La Vaquita enjoys the
opportunity to satisfy the cravings of
enthusiastic customers who come here to
enjoy the fresh conos filled with strawberry
and apple or the tender yet crispy churros.
The delicious flavors are the signature
of this bakery - ranging from the (apple,
pineapple or sweet potato) empanadas to
the chocoflan and tres leches cakes in the
cake case.
The round cakes come in 10-inch, threelayer
options topped with fresh strawberries
and chocolate pieces, offering the customers
a flavorful option for their desserts at the
end of the day. There are also fresh gelatins
- some with a mosaic of colors - to satisfy
those customers who wish a lighter dessert.
Throughout the day, trays and trays of
hot fresh bolillos are rolled out on to the
sales floor, offering shoppers a staple bread
to purchase and enjoy with their families.
This is truly a bakery " with a little
something extra, " just like the name of the
city of Beaumont describes.
