" baking can be lonely and isolating work, but it can be
even lonelier when you're the owner.
" You may have built a team around you, but there are
still emotional barriers to sharing your biggest hopes,
fears and challenges, " he adds. " And if you can't talk
about them, you can't achieve your goals or solve those
challenges. "
That's why the Bakery Leadership Circle is so important.
It's a way to get together with leaders who know
what it's like to carry this weight, to talk honestly about
what's really happening at your bakery, and to develop
actionable plans to achieve your goals, he explains.
" Once you can name your goal or challenge, really
call it out, you can examine it, understand it and make a
plan. But it's extremely difficult to see when you are too
close to the situation. It may be that you are part of the
problem, and you need to adjust the way you lead, or have
a challenging conversation that you've been avoiding. "
This is where the Bakery Leadership Circle really
shines. It's a safe space where you can be vulnerable
and honest, with a group of peers who care about you
enough to share what they are seeing and to help you
see things clearly. Your peers also care enough to hold
you accountable, so you actually apply what you've
learned inside the circle.
Sharing knowledge
Dyck is retired and spends his time talking to bakers
via his podcast (riseuppod.com) and online forum
(Bakers4Bakers.org).
Once you get past all the technical issues like sourcing
ingredients, worrying about tariffs, menu planning,
production scheduling, finding the right gear and the
like, it all comes down to making the shift from being
the baker to becoming a leader and business owner,
Dyck explains.
" It's never been easier to start baking and selling as
a cottage baker, " he says. " But making the leap to a
full-time brick and mortar operation is such a massive
stretch these days. It requires so much more than making
excellent products and promoting them on Instagram.
I see people who got into baking to avoid teams and
bosses. Here's a way to make people happy and put
money in my pocket, and I can do it myself. "
But after initial success, he adds, they want to make
the leap. They make a massive financial investment, hire
staff and then face all the leadership challenges they
