GOURMET GOES NATIONAL
Gourmet cakes and grocery stores don't typically go
hand-in-hand, unless you are specialty grocer The Fresh
Market. The bakery team recently completed a six-month
quest to find the best cakes across America. The benchmark was that the cakes had to rival any local bakery in
taste and quality. Two hundred cake tastings later, the team unanimously agreed on their top
five cakes: Pineapple Brown Sugar Cake,
Red Velvet, Triple Chocolate Truffle, Carrot Cake, and Boston Cream Cake.
The 8-inch cakes sell for $21.99 with
eight generous slices.
"We focused on smaller bakeries who
specialized in European-style desserts,
and ones who could customize for The
Fresh Market while delivering a consistent,
high-quality, elegant cake for our guests across all
161 of our locations," said Jay Mandrillo, director, bakery
sales and merchandising, for Fresh Market. "You will not
find these specific cakes anywhere else; they are truly
signature cakes for The Fresh Market, and ones you can
be proud to serve at any special occasion."
The cakes made their debut in mid-September at all
Fresh Market stores and are sold from the bakery department gourmet cold case. An all-store sampling event of
the Pineapple Brown Sugar and Triple Chocolate Truffle
cakes took place on Sept. 27.

Operation Cupcake

Georgetown Cupcake founders (and sisters) Katherine
Kallinis Berman and Sophie Kallinis LaMontagne are big
believers in supporting our troops. Since 2010, the bakery
continues its annual "Operation Cupcake" - a partnership
with the Office of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff
- in which they send 10,000 cupcakes to US troops serving
abroad each December. "At its core, Georgetown Cupcake
is about spreading happiness," the founders agree, "and that
feeling of happiness means a lot to our customers."
Production has grown steadily since 2008 when the
sisters opened their first retail store in the Georgetown area
of Washington, D.C. A year later, the co-owners opened a
shipping facility near Dulles Airport. Today, they have six
locations in Georgetown, Bethesda, Maryland, New York
City, Boston, Los Angeles and Atlanta. Georgetown Cupcake
also ships its cupcakes nationwide.
"We have ingredients coming in every day, batter is being
made, eggs being cracked, all in an organized process to
bake the cupcakes efficiently, frost them efficiently and
pack them efficiently. Every step of the way, where we can
be more efficient and save time and optimize the process,
that helps us run our business better," Berman told The Wall
Street Journal.
