majority of their stores operate a fresh bakery and all
feature a meat market and other perishables.
There are, of course, plans to open more markets,
"hopefully we will open another in the next year," Victor
Ramirez Jr. says.
The family originally grew up in Nuevo Leon, Mexico,
before moving to San Antonio. The business name, Culebra
Market, comes from the road where their first store in
San Antonio was located.
BakeMark has been with Culebra Market from
the beginning as a trusted bakery supplier, and Victor
Ramirez Jr. gives BakeMark much credit for providing
the consistency that the bakery business has needed to
grow and prosper.
"We like the loyalty we have with BakeMark, and
our business is good," he says. "We feel very blessed to
work with them. The taste of our cakes never changes,
for example, and that is very important to our customers."
Decorated tres leches cakes are a signature item here,
and other popular bakery products at Culebra Market
include Danish, mini pecan pies, cookies and donuts. They
fry their own donuts every day in the store. They offer
donuts with chocolate glaze, cinnamon sugar, chocolate
sprinkles and more.
"Our donut sales have picked up a lot," says Armando
Banegas, the bakery manager for Culebra Market #3 who
has 35 years of experience in the bakery business.

Banegas is a big reason why the bakery products here
are so loved by customers. He makes sure the conos are
filled correctly each day with the right mix of Bavarian
cream and a smear of strawberry and that each cake is
decorated to the customer's specifications.
The bakery manager knows the importance of
shifting flavors to the time of season, so they will offer
more pineapple during the summer months and shift to
emphasizing more fall flavors like pumpkin as the weather
in the fall begins to get a bit cooler.
"Cakes sell more in the summer," he says, adding that
pies have become another popular item. "Small pecan
pies sell well throughout the year."
Culebra Market makes specialty items like buñuelos
throughout the year, as well, but these sweet treats sell
especially well during the Christmas season, he says.
"That's when we make the most."
Another important feature at the bakery is the tortelleria,
where they produce fresh flour tortillas every day. Culebra
Market #3 will sell 600 to 700 packs of fresh tortillas per
day. There are 12 in each pack.
"We have a lot of tortilla business here," Victor
Ramirez Jr. says. "We make them throughout the morning,
and people come in to get their fresh tortillas every day."
It is that commitment to freshness and product
excellence that continues to serve the family business
well, as it plans to continue its success into the future.
